The first try on simultaneous interpretation!!
作為今年九月要去英國里茲大學念口譯研究所的先修預備課程，
從這學期開始我每周六都會去師大譯研所開設的口譯班報到。
昨天是第四堂課，請來一位超厲害超有氣質的口譯員─Nancy來擔任講師，
今天上課主題是視譯(sight translation),要練習較難的中譯英，演講內容又是硬梆梆的國際情勢分析，
就在這麼有挑戰性的情況下，老師忽然想要讓我們實際體驗一下做同步口譯到底有何等困難、多麼刺激，
而我有幸(或不幸?)被老師「欽點」為全班第一個進入口譯包廂(又名：Torture Chamber酷刑室)的「受難者」，
進行我生平第一次的同步口譯。(學習口譯今年是第二年，但之前實戰經驗都只到逐步口譯為止)
戰戰兢兢的爬到二樓口譯廂中，昏暗房間充斥著各種精密的儀器，
我大口深呼吸後戴上耳麥，耳機傳來老師在樓下試音的聲音，在座十幾位同學也紛紛戴上耳機準備聽我翻譯。
以下節錄自一小部份的講稿原文:
「美國入侵伊拉克的決定匯合了戰略上對抗全球恐怖主義的目標，和它在意識形態上推展民主的議程。但現在美國發現在複雜而動盪的情勢中，在當地擴大介入所面臨的巨大困難。
身為實質上的全球領導者，美國這個角色帶給它重大的負擔與責任，它必須將它國家的財富當中不成比例的花在維持其全球軍事能力上；目前它在海外部署五十萬名軍隊，而到目前為止它在伊拉克的活動中已投入超過3200億美元─而且這個數目預期在戰爭結束前還會增加一倍。
美國的強大也使它成為全世界不滿團體的目標。如果世貿中心和五角大廈不是世界上最富裕強大的國家的經濟與軍事象徵的話，奧薩瑪賓拉登也不會把它們當作目標。
強大的代價是，而且一直都是，不受歡迎。美國必須忍受它最久遠的盟邦的嫉妒，這些國家中有很多都樂於抨擊美國的政策，同時卻又接受其戰略保護傘的庇護。
美國很容易受到批評，無論它做了什麼。如果它起而執行聯合國對伊拉克的決議，他被指控為帝國主義，如果他沒有干涉其它危機─例如現在發生在達佛(蘇丹西部的種族屠殺)的衝突─它則被抨擊為不在意非洲人的苦難。」
我的譯文:
“The decision to invade Iraq of the United States has integrated its goal to fight against global terrorism and its ideology to develop democracy. But now it has discovered that in such a complicated and unstable situation, it has encountered huge obstacle when trying to extend its intervention locally.
As the practical leader in the world, this role has brought the United States great burden and responsibility. It has to spend its national budget disproportionately on maintaining its global military capability. Now the US has deployed 500,000 soldiers abroad, and so far it has spent over 320 billion USD, which is a figure expected to double before the war ends.
The strong power of the US has also made it the target of many dissatisfied groups all over the world. If World Trade Center and the Pentagon were not the economic and military symbol of the riches and the most powerful nation, Ossama Bin Ladin would not have chosen them as the attacking targets.
The price of being powerful, and has always been, unpopularity. The US has to tolerate jealous from its long-term allies, and many of these nations are willing to criticize America’s policy. Yet at the same time accept the protection from its protective umbrella.
The United States is easily to fall into criticism no matter what it did. If it executes the UN’s resolution to Iraq, it will be accused as imperialism. On the other hand, if it didn’t interfere with other crisis, for instance, the conflicts happening in Darfur(West part of Sudan) now, it will be criticized as been ignoring the afflictions of African people.”
老師才剛開始講沒幾十秒，我就發現我進度嚴重落後，
老師都講到第三句了我還在跟第一句奮鬥。
而且很多明明很簡單的詞，大概是一時太緊張了，就是想不起來對應的英文單字是哪些，要不然就是用錯字，
問題層出不窮…但我還是故作鎮定繼續撐下去，好在後來漸入佳境，老師講到最後一段時，我終於完全趕上她的tempo…
下台時同學和老師報予我熱烈的掌聲，我卻發現我的手在發抖...原來口譯員的壓力真的這麼大！
Nancy老師給我的評語是：「很順，滿好的，看不出來是第一次做同步口譯。
不過我覺得妳和一般初學者不太一樣；一般人都會盡力跟上我的速度，而不去管句子有沒有說完整，
有很多Hanging sentences(懸盪在那邊的句子)，讓觀眾聽得不知所云。
而你則很努力的把每一個句子都翻完、說完整，這樣讓觀眾聽得很舒服，由此可知你是個對自己要求很高的人。
但缺點是太慢了，Ideally，譯者只能比講者慢半句或頂多一句，但你慢了兩到三句。
若是翻這短短幾段還好，你可以靠記憶，但以後要做的是幾個小時的演講，可能會落後的越來越多，到最後完全跟不上講者的速度。
不過這個缺點可用多加練習來改進，而且翻得慢總比翻不完整來得好，所以Let’s give her a big hand!」
嗚哇~Nancy老師人太好了，她的encouragement帶給我很多溫暖和信心。(以後我也要當這種老師)
這次的同步口譯初體驗實在是太exciting了~!!畢生難忘阿，
勤能補拙，我一定會更努力練習翻譯技巧，
(還有經過這次發現我英文單字庫仍然不足，趕快多背單字吧)希望翻譯能力能日益精進啊！！
